Welcome

Pauline Bloomfield is a freelance textile artist, working mainly in embroidery. Based in the East Midlands, her work takes the form of  large embroidered wall hangings, smaller framed and  unframed wall pieces and cards. Inspiration for her work comes from a variety of sources including African art, travel and Mark Rothko’s paintings. Fabrics used to create her pieces include fleecy cottons, painted chiffons, dyed muslins and dupion silks. The fabrics are layered, stitched and finished with hand embroidery.

Ideas for the embroideries are developed in sketchbooks to begin with, from pencil drawings through to collages using tissue and plant papers, maybe even untreated felts. I may occasionally stitch into the collages using a variety of threads.

Images created using layered collage techniques can easily be developed into layers of translucent fabric which are secured with free machine stitching. My favourite fabrics include resida bump cotton natural, cross-woven dupion silks and and organzas. I apply colour to some of the fabrics, using commercially produced dyes and vegetable dyes, some of which are from Jamaica.

As African and Caribbean poetry, myths and legends are the main sources of inspiration for my work, I will become very engrossed in the texts before images are developed on paper and with fabrics. I usually work on two pieces at a time with a sketchbook open nearby should any other ideas come to me.
